The Plant Based PCT Resupply Guide, 2027 Season

A vegan hiker can buy as they go at about half of the 64 common PCT resupply stops, top up with some planning at another quarter, and should box the last dozen. The easy towns are Idyllwild, Big Bear Lake, Tehachapi, Bishop, South Lake Tahoe, Truckee, Quincy, Mount Shasta, Ashland, Bend and Leavenworth. Box it to Independence, Muir Trail Ranch, VVR, Tuolumne, Sierra City, Mazama Village, Shelter Cove, Big Lake Youth Camp, Timberline, White Pass, Stevens Pass and Stehekin, whose store is closed for 2026.

The “Send a box?” column is my recommendation for a vegan hiker, not whether the business accepts packages. Of 64 stops: no box needed at 34, a box is safer at 18, and box it at 12. “No box” can still mean a meal stop with no real store, like Lake Morena or Drakesbad, so read the vegan options column for what you can actually buy. Evidence runs through October 2026, so check 2027 operations before you mail anything.

The table is the quick version. Towns marked town guide have their own page with every store, restaurant and photo from my stop: Julian, Idyllwild, Big Bear, Tehachapi, Bishop, Mammoth Lakes, Tahoe and Truckee. Each section of the trail also has leg-by-leg pages from the PCT overview.

The table above is the guide. Every row names the store worth walking to, what a vegan can actually buy or eat there, whether to mail a box, and the date of the newest evidence behind it. The sections below explain the calls.

Where this plant based guide comes from

I thru-hiked the PCT northbound and vegan in 2021: Campo on April 30, the Canadian border on September 5, 129 days. I resupplied through most of the towns in the table, and I kept the receipts, the photos and a set of FarOut comments under my trail name, Atlas. The first-hand parts of this page come from that record and nowhere else.

A five-year-old memory of a store shelf is worth very little on its own, so every row was rechecked for the 2027 season. The first check was hiker comments in FarOut, read town by town through late September 2026 with a vegan lens: which comments mention TVP, tofu, vegan menus, closures and package policies, and when. The second was current web evidence, checked in early October 2026: store and co-op sites, National Park Service and Forest Service pages, resort package pages, and recent hiker-written resupply guides. Each row’s date is the newest piece of evidence that row relies on. Where a 2026 comment and a web page disagree, the row follows the newer one and says verify.

The short version, region by region

Southern California is the easiest plant based stretch

Nearly everything here can be bought as you go. Idyllwild (Fairway Market), Big Bear Lake (Vons, Stater Bros, Grocery Outlet), Wrightwood (Jensen’s Market plus the free vegan hot dog at Wrightwood Market) and Tehachapi (Albertsons, Save Mart, Walmart) are full shops. Julian and Acton are better for eating than shopping: Apple Alley’s vegan pie in Julian, the 49er Saloon’s vegan menu in Acton. The soft spots are Warner Springs, where the community center store is no longer staffed daily, Agua Dulce, where the market’s vegan stock is hit or miss, and the Hikertown and Neenach stretch, where the markets will make you a vegan burrito and Neenach stocks enough pricey vegan basics to reach Tehachapi. A box to Warner Springs and a light carry through the Mojave cover all three.

The Sierra is where boxes earn their postage

Kennedy Meadows South can restock a vegan: Triple Crown Outfitters stocked TVP and extra-protein peanut butter in June 2026, and Grumpy Bear’s has a real vegan menu. Bishop is the best plant based shop in the range, with Blue Lupine Health Foods selling TVP, powdered hummus and dehydrated refried beans. Mammoth is easy for supermarkets and vegan restaurants but lost its bulk-bin store when Sierra Sundance closed. Everything between those towns is a box: Independence, Muir Trail Ranch (no food for sale at all), VVR, Tuolumne Meadows, and Kennedy Meadows North, where the store is weak for vegans and 2026 package reports conflict.

Northern California is mostly easy, with three hard stops

South Lake Tahoe (Whole Foods, Grass Roots Natural Foods), Truckee (New Moon Natural Foods), Quincy (Feather River Food Co-op), Chester (Holiday Market), Burney (Safeway, Grocery Outlet) and Mount Shasta (Berryvale Natural Foods) are all buy-as-you-go towns, and Quincy and Mount Shasta both sell bulk bean flakes. Seiad Valley is a surprise: its store has a solid vegan shelf and the cafe makes vegan pancakes and burgers. The hard stops are Sierra City (expensive, one store, box it and eat Larry’s chickpea burger), Belden (USPS no longer delivers, so carry from Quincy) and Drakesbad and Old Station, which are a meal and a gas-station shelf. For more on the Tahoe stretch, see vegan South Lake Tahoe and Truckee.

Oregon is Ashland, Bend and a chain of resorts

Ashland is the plant based resupply of the state: Shop’n Kart’s bulk bins, the Ashland Food Co-op and Natural Grocers. Build your Oregon boxes there. After Ashland the trail runs through resorts whose restaurants have become much friendlier to vegans (Fish Lake’s Beyond burgers, Shelter Cove’s vegan breakfast burrito) while their stores stay thin. Box to Mazama Village, Shelter Cove and Big Lake Youth Camp. Sisters and Bend restock you fully; Bend has Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s and Market of Choice. Olallie Lake can carry you a few days on cash. Timberline is a vegan pizza and a box, then Cascade Locks sends you on the $1 bus to Hood River for groceries.

Washington comes down to three boxes

Trout Lake Grocery stocks tofu and produce and is the best small store in the state. Packwood’s grocery had a lot more plant-based stock in September 2026 than when I came through. Leavenworth is a full shop with TVP at Dan’s Food Market, and Snoqualmie Pass has Laconia Market & Cafe. The rest is box country: the Kracker Barrel at White Pass, Stevens Pass (UPS and FedEx only), and above all Stehekin, where the lodge store and restaurant are closed for the 2026 season. Check the park’s Stehekin page for 2027 before assuming they reopen.

What changed since 2021

These are the changes since my 2021 hike that matter most for a vegan resupply plan, with the date each was reported.

  • Stehekin: December 2025 flooding damaged the Landing’s wastewater system, and the National Park Service announced in May 2026 that the lodge would have no lodging, food service, retail, laundry or showers for 2026. The post office stayed open, USPS only. A new outfit, Camp Stehekin, sells a few meals and snacks.
  • Mammoth Lakes: Sierra Sundance, the natural foods store with bulk beans and grains, has permanently closed. Older guides still list it.
  • Idyllwild: Sky Island Natural Foods closed its retail store back in 2017, though some community guides still recommend it. Fairway and Village Market are the shops now.
  • Belden: USPS stopped delivering to Belden in 2023, and in September 2026 hikers found boxes stuck at the post office. Caribou Crossroads has a new owner and is not a post office.
  • Muir Trail Ranch: the store sells no food in 2026, only non-food basics. Buckets only.
  • Tuolumne Meadows: the store reopened in August 2024 after the rebuild, and the campground reopened August 1, 2025. The grill is back but thin for vegans.
  • Drakesbad: the guest ranch reopened July 18, 2025 after closing for the Dixie Fire, under new management in 2026, without resupply or package service.
  • Quincy: the old Quincy Natural Foods is now the Feather River Food Co-op, and it holds hiker packages for free.
  • Echo Lake: the Echo Chalet store stopped accepting hiker packages (confirmed May 2024).
  • Big Bear: the UPS Store changed owners and stopped mail drops in April 2025. The Ski Haus holds packages for free.
  • Julian: 2 Foot Adventures, where I bought vegan jerky and ProBars in 2021, is closed until March 2027.
  • Bishop: Hostel California stopped accepting resupply boxes in June 2026.
  • Timberline Lodge: USPS delivery to the lodge was reported stopped in February 2025, but an October 2025 hiker picked up a USPS package at the day lodge. Confirm with the lodge before choosing a carrier.
  • Cascade Locks: the Ale House closed and Whiskey Flats replaced it in June 2025.
  • Old Station: JJ’s Cafe is closed for all of 2026.
  • Burney: the Blackberry Patch restaurant burned in August 2024 and was still boarded up in September 2026.
  • Skykomish and Leavenworth: December 2025 flooding closed US 2; it reopened in stages through February 2026.

Where I ate and shopped in 2021, plant based all the way

This section comes from my receipts, photos, FarOut comments and interview answers. Where I am unsure of a name, it says so. The store and restaurant suggestions in the table above go further than my own stops: they come from recent hiker comments, menus and reviews, with the date of the evidence beside each one.

I also had help. Other hikers would pick up vegan bars for me, or tell me when they found good vegan stuff in a store and grab it for me.

At Mount Laguna, my receipt from Pine House Cafe & Tavern on May 2 reads “Vegan Burger,” $16, plus a soda. In Julian my only receipt is from 2 Foot Adventures: new Altras, a fuel canister, ProBar Meals, Primal Strips vegan jerky and fig bars.

In Idyllwild I photographed the sandwich and deli-slice fridge at Greenhaus Guerilla Kitchen, a vegan deli, market and refillery. Most of my groceries came from Fairway Foods, and my resupply photo shows vegan cookies, chips, pita, hummus, avocado, bananas and greens. I also had a soy chai at Higher Grounds. I have not rechecked Greenhaus for this guide, so confirm it is still open. The leg page has the rest: Julian to Idyllwild.

Wrightwood gave me two vegan bowls and a veggie dog, and the store with the PCT corner sold me ProBars, Munk Pack cookies and Kate’s bars. Tehachapi was a bar haul: Bobo’s, Clif, Larabar and Lenny & Larry’s.

Kennedy Meadows South is my best-documented stop. At Triple Crown Outfitters I rented a bear can and bought my Sierra food: couscous, instant refried beans, Minute Rice, tortillas, oatmeal packets, ProBar Meals, Lenny & Larry’s cookies, Clif Bloks and dried fruit. My $157.59 receipt included a $50 bear-can deposit and some gear as well as food. At Grumpy Bear’s Retreat I ate a Vegan Supreme pizza one night and a plant-based protein burger with avocado and tots the next. The Sierra leg starts there: Kennedy Meadows to Bishop.

In Bishop I ate at Looney Bean (a chai with oat milk, muffins and bagels) and shopped a natural foods store with bulk bins. My resupply photos from that stop show Bob’s Red Mill TVP, couscous, oats, walnuts, tortillas and a row of ProBar Meals. I didn’t note which store it was. Blue Lupine Health Foods is the bulk-foods store in Bishop now, and hikers found TVP there in 2026.

In Mammoth I had green juices and tahini cookies at Elixir Superfood & Juice, and an order from GOJIRA of a tofu and avocado salad, a sweet potato roll and two ramens with tofu. GOJIRA was still open in October 2026, with a veggie-broth ramen on the menu. The VVR side of that leg is a different story, told in the box section below.

In South Lake Tahoe I ate a vegan plate of beans, cabbage, salsa and avocado on flatbread. Sprouts Natural Foods Cafe on Harrison Avenue is still open, with bowls and wraps you can order without cheese. The leg after Tahoe is here: Truckee to the fire closure.

In Ashland I went to every store and my FarOut review says it plainly: go to Shop’n Kart and nowhere else. It had everything I needed at good prices, ProBars at $2.60, dried goods and a huge bar selection. See Ashland to Crater Lake.

In Bend I had a bowl of roasted potatoes, black beans and avocado, a vegan burger and a box of vegan donuts. At the Bridge of the Gods I took a five-minute ride to Stevenson, where the grocery had everything I needed. Packwood was the opposite in 2021: the grocery was still pretty bare with no bars, though I could piece a resupply together, and the 76 station had Clif bars. The Packwood Inn was good for the price. That leg is Bridge of the Gods to Packwood. In Leavenworth I ate two vegan sausage sandwiches and a pretzel.

Big Lake Youth Camp runs a vegetarian kitchen for hikers

Big Lake Youth Camp, a Seventh-day Adventist camp at mile 1997, is the one stop in this table where the default food is vegetarian. Hikers who come through during camp season get vegetarian meals, and the kitchen sets out vegan and gluten-free options when asked; one July 2026 hiker got vegan pizza. Showers, laundry and free package pickup make it a natural box stop. The catch is the calendar: hiker meals end in late August, and by mid-September 2026 the buildings were locked. Late Oregon hikers should treat it as a box stop only and confirm with the camp.

What goes in a box

I left four backup boxes at my dad’s house for weak resupplies, and I don’t think he ever had to send all of them. My rule was simple: send a box ahead only when the next stop has no grocery store. Before the hike I ordered Huel Hot & Savory meals and a Harmony House kit of dehydrated beans and vegetables, and my packing photo shows those and mixed nuts being portioned out. Breakfast was my protein oats: four small Quaker instant packets, a full scoop of protein powder, a spoon of hemp seeds and dried fruit. Box or store, every resupply had the same shape: a bar refill and a dinner refill, then usually Oreos, Sour Patch Kids, oats, chips and tortillas. Most of the time I bought it in town. I believe my first box was at Acton KOA, and near the end I mailed one ahead to myself in Stehekin from Leavenworth. The box I sent to VVR I never picked up because I missed the turnoff.

If you’re building your own: TVP or dehydrated beans, instant rice, couscous or potatoes, oats, nut butter, olive oil, nutritional yeast and the bars you actually still like. Build boxes in the good towns (Bishop, South Lake Tahoe, Ashland, Bend, Hood River) and mail them a week or two ahead, instead of shipping months of food from home.

Send boxes only where you will actually walk. Forwarding my missed VVR box would have cost $35. Fire years make it worse. When the Dixie Fire closed the trail north of Quincy, my Chester box had to bounce ahead to Etna, and I’d already bought three days of food in Quincy.

Sources and method

The first-hand layer is my own 2021 record: email receipts, order confirmations, my phone notes, my FarOut comments as Atlas, and about 140 food, store and resupply photos, reviewed in October 2026. Nothing in the first-hand sections is reconstructed beyond those records.

The current layer has two parts. FarOut (formerly Guthook) comment archives for the whole trail were pulled on September 30, 2026 and read town by town for vegan, store-status and package signals, with comments dated from 2014 through late September 2026; the table uses only recent ones unless a row says otherwise, and no commenter is named. Web checks ran in early October 2026 against store and co-op sites, National Park Service pages for Stehekin, Tuolumne Meadows, Red’s Meadow and Lassen, the Forest Service page for Olallie Lake, resort package pages such as VVR’s and Muir Trail Ranch’s, Halfmile’s resupply notes (November 2023) and Erik the Black’s resupply guide (January 2026). In October 2026 I also checked every row against the Vegan PCT 2024 WhatsApp group summary that a hiker shared in a PCT Facebook group. Its tips that still hold up are in the table, marked 2024, and no one in it is named.

For context on how common this is: in the Halfway Anywhere 2025 PCT survey, 29.9% of hikers reported a dietary restriction, and 11.5% of those were vegan. Vegans rated resupply difficulty 3.52 out of 10, harder than vegetarians (2.80) and easier than gluten-free hikers (4.05).

Rows are re-dated only when new evidence arrives. If a row’s date is more than a season old, call the store before you stake a hungry week on it.
