South Lake Tahoe and Truckee Plant Based Resupply for PCT Hikers
South Lake Tahoe, reached from Echo Lake around PCT mile 1092, is the strongest vegan resupply in the northern Sierra: Whole Foods with TVP, Grass Roots Natural Foods, Raley's and Safeway. Truckee, about 12 miles from Donner Pass, is smaller and still good, with New Moon Natural Foods and its vegan deli. Neither town needs a mail drop, and both are good places to buy food for smaller stops ahead.

South Lake Tahoe, around mile 1092
You reach South Lake Tahoe from Echo Lake. Whole Foods, Raley’s and Safeway cover bulk calories, and hikers found TVP at Whole Foods in both 2024 and 2025. Grass Roots Natural Foods on Dunlap Drive is the specialty stop for bulk goods, plant milks and tofu. This is the town to stock up hard and build boxes for the thin stops ahead.
| Business | What a vegan can get | Status, with evidence date |

| Echo Lake store | Enough for a couple of days, including some fresh produce, at a steep markup | A vegan hiker called it plenty in June 2026. Closed for the 2026 season by September 10. Does not hold boxes |
| Taste of Tahoe | Nothing right now | Closed until further notice, June 2025 |
Restaurant notes from hikers with vegan options here are mostly from 2018 and 2019, so treat any older recommendation as unconfirmed.
Truckee, around mile 1155
You reach Truckee from Donner Pass, about 12 miles away. New Moon Natural Foods is the stop that matters: hikers in July 2026 praised its hard-to-find vegan resupply items and a vegan reuben. Safeway, Save Mart and Grocery Outlet handle the cheap calories.
| Business | What a vegan can get | Status, with evidence date |
|---|---|---|
| New Moon Natural Foods | Vegan jerky, single-serve items, large deli sandwiches, and a vegan reuben | Hiker comments July 2026 |
| Safeway | Full supermarket staples | No dated hiker report found; verify |
| Save Mart | Full supermarket staples | Halfmile town notes, 2023 |
| Grocery Outlet | Discount staples | Named in 2026 hiker summaries |
| Donner Ski Ranch | Restaurant with vegan options; the store shelf is tiny | Vegan options noted 2023; store shelf mostly ramen in 2026 |
| Soda Springs store | Basic top-up, no dehydrated meals | Hiker note 2025 |
If you stay up at Soda Springs or Donner Pass and skip Truckee, carry or box your food.
What I ate here
I came through South Lake Tahoe on day 67, July 5, 2021. Photo #1677 is a plate of beans, cabbage, carrots, tomato, salsa and avocado on flatbread with a melted vegan cheese-style topping, chips, Cholula and a green juice.
If you want a hot meal in town, Sprouts Natural Foods Cafe on Harrison Avenue is still open and its menu has bowls, wraps and a tempeh burger. Some dishes come with jack cheese or honey mustard, so order them without.
My dad picked us up at the Echo Summit trailhead early on the morning after the Fourth, when we figured the town would still be asleep, and took us to Raley’s in South Lake Tahoe for a big resupply before Desolation. We were back on trail that afternoon. I remember avocados, bars, almond-butter and jelly packets, arugula, tortillas, Sour Patch Kids and Oreos. After the bear took our food, we resupplied again. Bitchin’ Sauce and Tofurky went into makeshift sandwiches, and I remember Whole Foods donuts, individual hummus packs, noodles, prepared salads and vegan sushi.
During the three zeros after the bear took our food, I bought two protein cookies, three ProBar Meal bars and three nut butter bars at REI in Reno on July 7, alongside new shoes and an Ursack.
Getting to town from the trail
For South Lake Tahoe, hikers leave the trail at Echo Lake. For Truckee, the trail crosses Donner Pass, and town is about 12 miles away.
My dad gave us a ride into South Lake Tahoe. I don’t remember going into town from Donner.
Mail drops
Neither town needs one for food. If you are receiving gear, the Mellow Mountain Hostel in South Lake Tahoe held packages for $5 in 2025, and the South Lake Tahoe post office takes general delivery at ZIP 96150. In Truckee there are two post offices, and Office Boss next to Safeway receives packages; a 2025 hiker found it easier than USPS. Donner Ski Ranch asked hikers not to send packages in June 2026.
The call between them
Take South Lake Tahoe for the big resupply and Truckee as the top-up. Both are good towns to buy enough food to carry through smaller stops. Check a recipient’s current package rules before mailing ahead; Belden had USPS delivery problems in September 2026.
