Plant Based PCT Mail Drops: What Actually Goes in the Box
Mail boxes only to the stops that need them: Kennedy Meadows South, VVR, Sierra City, the Oregon resorts, and most of Washington. Pack calorie density first: dehydrated beans, TVP, instant rice and potatoes, nut butter, oil packets, oats, and the exact snacks you crave. Assemble boxes in trail towns using each recipient's required lead time instead of shipping months of food from home.
The mistake everyone makes once
Shipping twenty boxes from home in March means eating March’s cravings in August. Halfway Anywhere’s 2025 hiker survey backs the hybrid approach: about 80% of respondents mailed a few or some of their resupplies and bought the rest. The guide reports an average of 8.7 boxes among finishers (median 7), including those who sent none. One respondent’s advice was that vegans “should rely more heavily on boxes,” because the thin stops are thinner for us, and the fix is the same: assemble boxes in Mammoth, South Lake Tahoe or Ashland and mail them one leg ahead.
Stops that earn a box
The full trail-order table lives in the resupply guide. The short list: Kennedy Meadows South, VVR, Sierra City, Crater Lake, Shelter Cove, White Pass, Stevens Pass, Stehekin. Snoqualmie and Cascade Locks are judgment calls. Carry food through Belden; hikers reported USPS delivery problems there in September 2026.

I left four backup boxes at my dad’s house for weak resupplies, and I don’t think he ever had to send all of them. My rule was simple: send a box ahead only when the next stop has no grocery store. Before the hike I ordered Huel hot and savory meals and a Harmony House kit of dehydrated beans and vegetables, and portioned them out with mixed nuts. Breakfast in the boxes was protein oats: four small Quaker instant packets, a full scoop of protein powder in a rotating flavor, about a tablespoon of hemp seeds and some dried fruit. The recipe is here: Trail Protein Oats. Box or store, every resupply had the same shape: a bar refill and a dinner refill, then usually Oreos, Sour Patch Kids, oats, chips and tortillas. Most of the time I bought it in town. I believe my first box was at Acton KOA, and from Leavenworth I mailed one ahead to myself in Stehekin. One box went to VVR, and I never picked it up because I missed the turnoff.
Method notes
Check the recipient’s own shipping instructions before mailing. Muir Trail Ranch asks for USPS Priority Mail at least three weeks ahead, and VVR asks for arrival at least two weeks ahead. Their seasonal deadlines take priority over a general one-week plan. Muir Trail Ranch and VVR publish their instructions.
Number the boxes and label them with your name and ETA exactly as the recipient asks. Muir Trail Ranch requires the address label on the lid; VVR asks for your name and ETA on four sides. Keep a running note of what ran out early and what you carried out of town untouched. That note is the difference between box five being better than box one.
