Idyllwild Plant Based Food Guide for PCT Hikers

Buy your food in Idyllwild instead of boxing it. Fairway Foods Market covers a full vegan resupply with produce and plant-based staples, Greenhaus Guerilla Kitchen was a fully vegan deli and market when I came through in May 2021, and several cafes do vegan plates. Sky Island Natural Foods closed in 2017, so specialty items like TVP belong in a box. Town is about five miles off trail at mile 179.

The short version

One route into Idyllwild leaves the PCT at Saddle Junction, near mile 179.4. Shop Fairway Foods for the bulk of the resupply. Greenhaus had vegan sandwiches and deli slices when I came through in 2021, but I haven’t confirmed it is still operating, so check before you plan around it. For specialty dry goods such as TVP and dehydrated beans, bring your own or arrange a box. The old Sky Island retail store has closed.

Check the calendar before you plan a meal. A hiker in April 2026 found most of the restaurants closed or not serving on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Sky Island Natural Foods Nothing. The retail store closed Closed by February 2017 (Idyllwild Town Crier). Some older hiker guides still list it

I couldn’t find a recent report on Greenhaus, so call or walk by before you count on it. If it’s closed, Fairway Foods and the Village Market still cover a vegan resupply, and the cafes in the table seem to have options too.

What I ate here

I was in town on days 10 and 11, May 9 and 10, 2021. My receipt from Higher Grounds on May 10 is an iced chai latte with soy milk and an extra shot, $6.69. At Greenhaus I photographed the door and the deli fridge: vegan sandwiches named Mayham, Rick Reuben, Pig Champion and Snaxegrinder, plus bulk vegan deli meats, coconut mozzarella, smoked cheddar and pepperoni slices.

My haul that day, laid out on a curbside bench (photo #196), was Uncle Eddie’s vegan chocolate chip cookies, organic kettle chips, whole wheat pita, an avocado, bananas, Organic Girl Supergreens and Sabra roasted red pepper hummus. Back on trail on day 12, I filled pita with avocado, BBQ chips and vegan jerky (photo #255).

Most of my groceries came from Fairway Foods, including part of the haul in #196. Greenhaus was where I went for prepared food and treats like vegan candy bars, and the outdoor store in town had bars. When my dad asked how it was going that weekend, I admitted I’d been spending a bunch on the vegan stuff in Idyllwild.

Getting to town from the trail

There are two ways in. From the PCT at Saddle Junction, near mile 179, the Devil’s Slide Trail drops to Humber Park above town, and from there it’s a walk or a ride down the road, about five miles in all (Halfmile notes, 2023). I came in earlier: on day 10 we hitched from Highway 74 near the Paradise Valley Cafe, around PCT mile 152.

Mail drops

You don’t need one for food. If you want TVP or bulk dehydrated staples, send them General Delivery to the Idyllwild post office (ZIP 92549, per a January 2026 hiker note). Hikers reported Saturday pickup from noon to 1 pm in June 2025. Confirm the pickup window before mailing.

The full trail-order table is in the vegan PCT resupply guide. The leg that ends here is Julian to Idyllwild, and the rest of the section is on the Southern California desert page.

Checked October 5, 2026: FarOut hiker comments through June 2026, web listings and store sites (Fairway Foods, Idyllwild Town Crier, HappyCow and Halfmile’s 2023 town notes), and my own 2021 receipts and photos.
