Mammoth Lakes Plant Based Food Guide for PCT Hikers

Mammoth Lakes is an easy vegan stop for meals and supermarket staples. Shop Vons or Grocery Outlet, eat at Elixir Superfood and Juice, the Smoke Shack or Stellar Brew, and check road and shuttle access from Red's Meadow, near mile 908, before you plan the trip in. Sierra Sundance, the old natural foods store with bulk bins, has closed, so buy TVP and bulk staples in Bishop or mail them here.

The short version

Mammoth is a resort town with full supermarkets and several cafes that do vegan food. The supermarkets carry ordinary vegan staples. What Mammoth lost is its natural foods store: Sierra Sundance has closed (its last reviews date to August 2021), and several hiker guides still send people there. If you rely on TVP, bulk beans or other specialty dry goods, buy them in Bishop or put them in a box to Mammoth.

What I ate here

I came through Red’s Meadow and Mammoth on days 55 to 57, June 23 to 25, 2021.

On June 24 at Elixir I bought two cold-pressed green juices, Green Wonder and Daily Greens, two tahini chocolate chip cookies, a kombucha, a Runa and a shop-made vegan Snickers-style bar. Photo #1443 shows the juices and the bar. The same day an online order from GOJIRA brought a tofu and avocado salad, two ramen bowls with tofu and a sweet potato roll with avocado.

The resupply went out across the motel dresser (photo #1454): Minute Rice, Barilla spaghetti, Mom’s Best quick oats, Artisana nut butter, chia, an omega-3 nut and seed mix, Popcorners, ProBar, Luna and Solely fruit bars, and Muir Energy gels. Other photos from that stop show McCormick Bac’n Pieces, Near East couscous, miso soup, Mrs. Dash, carrots, avocados, kiwis and tortillas.

Grocery Outlet had a lot of good vegan options for the resupply.

GOJIRA, at 452 Old Mammoth Road, was taking online orders in October 2026. Its current menu lists the Mothramen with veggie broth. The standard Gojiramen comes with egg, so ask staff to confirm the noodles and toppings when you order it vegan. Looney Bean, at 26 Old Mammoth Road, was still open in 2026, with Yelp reviews through September 2026.

Getting to town from the trail

Mammoth is reached from Red’s Meadow, near mile 908, by shuttle bus into Mammoth. The 2026 shuttle schedule runs Saturdays and Sundays through October 11. Road construction affects access; check the current road and bus schedule before planning a trip.

I hitched from Red’s Meadow with a day hiker who was stoked to talk with PCT people.

Mail drops

Mammoth’s post office takes general delivery. A June 2026 hiker reported no Saturday pickup, after conflicting pickup-window reports in 2025, so confirm your pickup day before mailing. Mammoth Coffee Roasting Co accepts packages, though one hiker’s was returned to sender in 2024. With full supermarkets in town, a box only makes sense for the specialty staples you can’t buy here anymore. Mammoth is also a good town to assemble a box for the remote stops north of it.

The full trail-order table is in the vegan PCT resupply guide. Read Bishop to Mammoth via Muir Pass; the Sierra section page has the map and the legs that are live, including Kennedy Meadows to Bishop.

Checked October 5, 2026: FarOut hiker comments through September 2026, web listings (HappyCow, Wanderlog, TripAdvisor, the National Park Service and Eastern Sierra Transit pages, Halfmile’s 2023 town notes), and my own 2021 receipts and photos.
