Bishop to Mammoth via Muir Pass
Back over Kearsarge, then a pass every day until Red’s Meadow. Mosquitoes, a sore heel and two zeros in Mammoth.

I went back over Kearsarge from Bishop, then over Glen Pass on day 49. Pinchot, Mather, Muir, Selden and Silver followed in the day titles. I was going over passes around eleven to thirteen thousand feet, day after day.
The mosquitoes were horrendous. My heel was also putting a limit on how long I wanted to stay out. I wrote that a seven-day stretch was about the limit. This one ended at Red’s Meadow, with a hitch into Mammoth on day 55.
Quoted lines are from my 2021 logs, verbatim.

I took two zeros in Mammoth. “This section was brutal.” I also said the JMT was amazing.
“You seriously for the first like week in the Sierra want to take a picture of every stream because it’s so rare in that section.” I was still taking a lot of pictures of the water.
In town, the heat wave had even emptied the water section at Vons when I went there. I had food to sort for the next carry before getting back out.

The food, then and now
Mammoth had green juices from Elixir and tofu ramen at GOJIRA. The next resupply included rice, couscous, miso soup, dehydrated meals and protein powder. This is also where I estimated eating 3,500 to 4,000 calories a day. Getting more meant carrying more over the passes.
Elixir still lists its Mammoth location, with juices and bowls. Hikers reported vegan soup at Noodle-ly in June 2024. GOJIRA’s current menu has Mothramen with vegetable broth; ask about the noodles and toppings. Its standard Gojiramen includes egg. Checked October 8, 2026. The Mammoth food guide has more resupply options.
