Wet gear, long climbs and a Seattle family who went to REI for me.

My replacement shoes missed me in Packwood by about two hours. I was back on trail without them, heading through Rainier country toward Snoqualmie Pass.
The climbing made the days long. “Days are long when it’s 5-6k feet of climbing.” My rain fly had stayed wet for about four days straight. I called day 118 “Washington is hard”. Even the short day into Snoqualmie was 19.9 miles. My neros were twenties by then.
Quoted lines are from my 2021 logs, verbatim.

Coming down toward Chinook Pass, I met a family from Seattle. It was busy with day hikers, and we talked for a while. I asked whether a bus ran from Snoqualmie Pass to Issaquah so I could get to REI for shoes.
The mother offered to go to REI herself, buy the Hoka Speedgoats and leave them at my hotel at the pass. She asked if I wanted any special vegan food too. When I asked about paying, she told me the shoes were a gift from the family.
“Above and beyond totally.” It was the best trail angel help I got.

Packwood’s grocery shelves were pretty bare when I went through. I could piece together a resupply, but it had no bars. I noted that the 76 station had Clif bars and similar things. Before Snoqualmie I ran out: “I was completely out yesterday after a few bars.” At the pass there were a couple of restaurants, an inn, a gas station and a coffee shop. I don’t remember the meals.
Hikers reported vegan meals and resupply options at Laconia Market in September and October 2025, including produce, Larabars and peanut butter. Check the market’s current site before your stop. Commonwealth’s online ordering menu also describes a lentil-and-rice burger as vegan without aioli; ask about the bun and current availability. Checked October 8, 2026.
