Shelter Cove to Bend via the Three Sisters

My first forty-mile day, lava underfoot and the 2,000-mile marker on the way into Bend.

By · walked Aug 12–14, 2021 · published · updated

On August 12 I did 40.1 miles. I called the day “100 degrees, humid, smokey, dry”. My first forty came with all of that at once.

I went through the Three Sisters the next day, then passed the 2,000-mile marker on the way into Bend. I wrote about my first forty-mile day and first hundred miles in three days. I was hiking solo and finally pushing the miles the way I had wanted to.

Quoted lines are from my 2021 logs, verbatim.

Before the pickup, there was a long stretch of lava rock. In my FarOut comment at Lava Camp Lake Junction, I described almost all lava from there to the camps near mile 1989, apart from a couple of short dirt sections. It was worth remembering when arranging a ride out of Santiam Pass.

My brother-in-law picked me up near Santiam Pass and helped me with the resupply. I spent the night at my sister’s house, and the next day he drove me back to the trail. That was another fire skip, around the closure ahead.

The food, then and now

My Bend town list included rice, potatoes, plastic bags and chips. I also needed new toe socks and went to REI. We got donuts in Bend and went to a really nice grocery store, though I don’t remember which one. There’s also a picture of a burger from that day, and I don’t remember the restaurant.

Hikers reported vegan food at A Broken Angel and Toasty in September 2026. Another option is Active Culture’s Bend menu, which lists vegan chili and marks its Lentil Goodness Bowl and Veggie Bowl vegan. Order the chili without the optional cheddar. Checked October 8, 2026.
