Leavenworth to Stehekin via Glacier Peak

Snow and rain, then clear-weather climbs and Lake Chelan before the last push.

By · walked Aug 30–Sep 3, 2021 · published · updated

I left Leavenworth on day 123. The next day was wet, snowy and horrible. I still did 29.6 miles. Then the weather cleared, with more big climbs through Glacier Peak country and into the North Cascades.

There wasn’t cell signal after about mile 2450, so I had tested texting on the inReach. “Feeling goooood. Got this.” There was still bad weather to deal with, but I was getting close.

Quoted lines are from my 2021 logs, verbatim.

I reached Stehekin by Lake Chelan on day 126. I described it as weird but pretty. There was no road out to the rest of Washington. I was saying the climbs were going well, after that awful weather a couple of days earlier.

I left on day 127 with the last push ahead. “Alright I’m out push starts now.” Then it was back to walking.

The food, then and now

I believe my last box was the one I mailed to myself in Stehekin from Leavenworth. I don’t remember what was in it. I don’t have a Stehekin bakery order to put here either.

For a trip now, NPS says Stehekin has limited grocery and food services, with the North Cascades Lodge closed for the 2026 summer season. A July 2026 hiker found a few backpacker meals and snacks at Camp Stehekin and would not count on a full resupply there. Stehekin Pastry Company lists a limited breakfast and lunch menu, but does not specify vegan pastries. Ask before relying on them. NPS instructs PCT hikers to send packages through USPS. Checked October 8, 2026.
