No-Cook Plant Based Backpacking Meals

A ready-to-eat vegan day of tortillas, peanut butter, bars, peanuts, raisins and hemp hearts comes to about 3,400 calories, 115 grams of protein and 805 grams of food. Cold soaking is a separate method that needs testing with the exact ingredients.

Food you can eat the minute you stop

The easiest no-cook food is the stuff you can eat on a rock without unpacking anything: tortillas with peanut butter, bars, peanuts and dried fruit. Hemp hearts go inside the wrap. The catch is eating the same things over and over, so pick food you’ll still want on day five.

A worked day

Food Food weight kcal Protein g
GoMacro peanut butter chocolate chip MacroBar 207 g 870 33.0
Mission soft taco flour tortillas 196 g 560 16.0
SKIPPY creamy peanut butter 128 g 760 28.0
Planters unsalted dry-roasted peanuts 84 g 510 24.0
Sun-Maid golden raisins 160 g 520 4.0
Manitoba Harvest natural hemp hearts 30 g 180 10.0
Total 805 g 3,400 115.0

That’s three full-size bars, four tortillas and weighed portions of the rest. Split the wraps between lunch and dinner and graze on the snacks all day. Wrappers and containers aren’t counted. Adjust it to your appetite.

These are the exact products in the math, so a different tortilla or bar changes the totals. It’s a lot of peanuts and dried fruit, so try a day of it at home before a long carry. If you want something savory, swap some snacks for crackers, roasted beans or a shelf-stable spread and redo the numbers.

Cold soaking is its own thing

Adding water doesn’t make every dry food edible. Regular rice and lentils need cooking. For instant foods, test the exact product at home: how much water, how long, and whether you’d actually eat it. Use treated water and only soak what you’re about to eat. The cold-soaking guide goes further.

Why I carried a stove

My interview answer was: “I never cold soaked really, so usually always cooked quickly.” I liked warm food in the morning and at night. This page is for a stoveless trip, or for a lunch that keeps the stove in the pack.
